¿Why La Queer Cocina?
I’m Chicano and for the first four years of my life I ate almost nothing but homemade comida Mexicana. Which means that that’s what I want. All. The. Time. But when I moved from my Midwestern hometown to New England, I suddenly found myself unable to access the food I was raised on.
I want to make a space where POCs & queers cooking on a budget can share & access recipes which remind them of home. I encourage recipe submissions, comments, questions, and suggestions.
Also, I really prioritize spending my money at businesses owned by people of color. Not all of us have this option! But I’m lucky to live within walking distance of a great pan-Asian grocery store, so that’s where I try to do most of my shopping. (For this reason, a lot of the recipes I share are heavily influenced by Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese cooking, though I myself am not Asian identified.)
